Searching for the Origins of Hotelling's Model (1931)
Mardi 25 novembre 2025, Antoine Missemer
Résumé : Harold Hotelling's 1931 article, "The Economics of Exhaustible Resources," is a seminal work in natural resource economics, introducing the famous *Hotelling's rule* still widely used in energy and climate economics. This presentation explores the origins and impact of Hotelling's model, examining why it was considered innovative and how a young economist and mathematician in the 1920s came to study natural resources. Drawing on an in-depth analysis of Hotelling's personal archives at Columbia University, the study highlights the influence of his career and preparatory work on the article and on the evolution of the field up to the present day. The presentation particularly references two recent publications: [https://doi.org/10.1257/jel.20231700] and [https://doi.org/10.1215/00182702-9548337].
