Titre de sa présentation : Do you need an extra applicant?  Evidence from quasi-random caseworker assignment

Résumé : Firms face increasingly large applicant pools: more candidates offer more opportunities to find a suitable worker, but also more applications to assess. This paper studies whether expanding employers’ choice sets improves recruitment or makes decisions harder. Using quasi-random assignment of employers to caseworkers who screen applications in the French Employment Service, I estimate the effect of an additional candidate reaching the recruiter. One additional candidate raises the probability of a contract proposal within three months by 3.1 percentage points and of a hire within one year by 0.8 percentage points, with strongly diminishing returns. Longer shortlists have lower average fit but contain more suitable candidates. Firms are efficient in their filtering as the larger number of candidates does not change the selected candidates’ overall measured quality and does not change decision making time. Given the growing use of screening systems for the first stage of recruitment, these results plead for adapting shortlist size to the vacancy and labor market characteristics, directing additional candidates mainly toward employers with constrained choice-sets.
