Ai and antitrust: insights from reinforcement learning
Mardi 27 janvier 2026, Ibrahim Abada, Professeur associé d'économie à GEM Alpine Business School
Résumé : Algorithms are increasingly prevalent in industries such as e-commerce and finance, allowing for rapid price adjustments. We show that Reinforcement Learning algorithms, widely used in dynamic pricing and retailing optimization, can independently formulate predatory strategies without any human guidance. Additionally, beyond the typical predation-accommodation trade-off, we provide evidence that these algorithms can engage in adversarial tactics and manipulate a new entrant's perception of market conditions. These behaviors raise significant concerns for marketers and retailers relying on AI pricing tools, as they entail potential ethical and regulatory risks. We propose solutions to address these challenges and stress the urgent need to adapt regulations and retailing practices to the realities of AI-driven marketplaces.
