Titre de sa présentation : Flexclusivity: Exclusive Agreements with Competitive Flexibility

Résumé : Would a seller ever choose to exclude rival buyers? We show that she may. Before values are known, she sells one buyer priority, an option to purchase, and approaches rivals only if he declines. Declining reveals a low value, and this weakness gives the preferred buyer an advantage in subsequent competition, whether the seller runs an optimal auction or buyers bid in a first-price auction. With symmetric buyers, this advantage makes flexclusivity, with exclusive and competitive paths both occurring, optimal. Priority may reduce welfare by excluding rivals, but can also correct auction distortions or inefficient no-sale events.
