Titre de sa présentation : Dynamic Willpower

Résumé : We develop an infinite-horizon model of self-control in which willpower is a finite stock shaped by past temptation. Its upper bound is distinct from the range of current temptation shortfalls: the primitive domain contains temptations strong enough to exceed maximal willpower, even though the constraint may be slack on many decision problems. Commitment devices that implement the same act can have different continuation values because they generate different temptation shortfalls and hence different future stocks of willpower. In an exercise application, today's temptation exposure shapes tomorrow's capacity for self-control, so childhood external control can alter the path of later autonomy. In a stationary saving application, willpower places an endogenous upper bound on sustainable liquid saving; when this bound binds, the stationary interest rate is pinned down by sustainable temptation rather than discounting. We axiomatize the representation over intertemporal problems with self-discretion and external control.
