Résumé : People vary in their level of altruism, but also in its scope, i.e. whether they favor their in-group (parochialism) or all people equally (universalism). These dimensions are generally studied independently, yet two strands of literature suggest they may be related in different ways. Are the most altruistic individuals those who extend their moral concern to everyone, or those who devote it to their close groups? To address this question, we propose an online experiment designed to measure both the level and the scope of altruism among participants from four natural groups (U.S./EU × student/non-student) who allocate real monetary endowments among group members. While moral universalism has so far been assessed mainly through non-incentivized surveys, we introduce a fully incentivized measure that disentangles universalism from reciprocity and moral deservingness concerns.
