Séminaire

On September 25, 2025

Titre de sa présentation : On the Heterogeneity and Predictive Ability of Inequality Averse Preferences.

Résumé : We explore the heterogeneity in preferences towards inequality, aiming to characterize these preferences and assess their predictive power. By employing a clustering algorithm on data from interpersonal money allocations, we identify distinct preference types: inequality averse, altruistic, and selfish. These types remain stable over time and across datasets.
The identified preference types exhibit high predictive accuracy for out-of-sample behaviors, outperforming both representative agent models and machine learning algorithms. We demonstrate the usefulness of this preference characterization for predicting and explaining real-world economic choices, such as charitable giving, support for redistributive policies, and responses to factual information.
